NADA 5-Point Ear Protocol Training

About Carolyn Reuben

Hello! I am a Licensed Acupuncturist, Health Educator, and Registered Trainer with NADA, the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association. My specialty is teaching physicians, acupuncturists, and addiction professionals the NADA 5-Point Ear Protocol and treatment curriculum.  The curriculum includes treatment of addictive, mental health, and post-traumatic stress disorders.

1968 was a grand time for anyone interested in social justice and I felt lucky to have graduated that year from the University of California, Berkeley in sociology. I worked as a social worker for Alameda County and then as a production assistant at Israel’s educational television station before entering graduate school to study motion pictures and television at UCLA. That lead to work in media in Los Angeles.

I wrote medical films for patient education on topics such as childhood asthma, stroke, hysterectomy, cataract surgery, and an introduction to puberty for an audience of adolescent girls. I was also the health columnist for the Los Angeles Weekly newspaper from 1981 through 1991, and wrote these four self-help health books:

Essential Supplements for Women (coauthored with Joan Priestley, MD); The Healthy Baby Book: A Parent’s Guide to Preventing Birth Defects and Other Long-Term Medical Problems Before, During, and After Pregnancy; Antioxidants: Your Complete Guide; and Cleansing the Body, Mind, and Spirit.

In 1979 I entered SAMRA University of Health Sciences in Los Angeles to pursue a career in Chinese medicine.

After receiving my state license as an acupuncturist in 1983 I moved to China for three months of study at the Nanjing College of Traditional Chinese Medicine and for another six weeks at Dongzhiman Hospital, Beijing, before opening my own practice in acupuncture in Los Angeles, relocating to Sacramento in 1990.

A colleague introduced me to Devi Nambudripad, RN, DC, LAc, PhD, MD who, in 1996, taught me the Nambudripad Allergy Elimination Techniques. A few years later a patient suggested I incorporate Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) into my allergy work and I found it to be a useful addition to my allergy elimination toolbox.

However, starting in 1992, I was introduced to the use of tiny round seeds on a piece of medical tape on the ear. Pressing on the seeds, I learned, can trigger positive responses in the body, releasing pain relieving endorphins and directing specific organs to start functioning better. I remembered hearing Dr. Michael Smith, MD, speak at my medical college in 1980 about his five-Point Ear Protocol for addictive and mental health disorders. And I soon was enthralled with the opportunity his Protocol offered to not only people with addictions but to my patients and to people under stress everywhere.

In 1994 a group of us in Sacramento formed a nonprofit called Community Addiction Recovery Association (CARA) and acquired contracts with the Probation Department, Mexican American Alcoholism Program, Parole Department, CORE Medical Clinic and many other agencies to provide the Protocol and an expanded program of pharmaceutical-free treatments including nutrition education, cooking, food distribution, yoga, tai chi, qigong, Emotional Freedom Technique, and nutritional supplementation for brain repair.

When CARA sponsored a national conference on pharmaceutical-free addiction treatment so many people enthusiastically requested remaining in contact we created a national nonprofit called Alliance for Addiction Solutions. You can read all about AAS at www.transformingaddiction.com.

Although CARA no longer exists the Alliance most certainly does, and offers educational seminars, a seasonal newsletter, and a networking opportunity so you don’t have to feel so alone in your enlightened view of true, profound, and lasting brain repair.

I no longer see private patients for allergy elimination but work instead as a consultant and teacher, advising programs how to integrate nutrient therapy and auricular therapy into their existing treatment program and providing individuals and whole staff the 30-hour didactic portion of the NADA 5-Point Ear Protocol curriculum. I also supervise the practicum segment of the training, preparing students to receive their certificate as Acudetox Specialists.
